Free Cold Care Guide from Dr. Jocko
Cold Care Cheat Sheet
Rest, fluids, symptom relief, and time. Skip the antibiotic.
As an ER physician and a dad of four boys, here is the good news I share at home: colds are caused by viruses, and most get better on their own with time. This free one page sheet covers rest, fluids, what actually helps, kids rules, and when to get checked.
- Skip the antibiotic. Antibiotics don't work against viruses and won't help you feel better.
- What actually helps. Rest, plenty of fluids, a clean humidifier, saline spray, steam, lozenges, and honey for anyone age 1 and older.
- Kids need special care. No OTC cough and cold medicines under age 6, no lozenges under age 4, and no honey under age 1.
- When to get checked. Trouble breathing, dehydration, fever longer than 4 days, or symptoms that last more than 10 days or return worse.
