Diabetes Part 1: Early Symptoms
Thirsty all the time and up at night to pee? Here is what CDC, NIH and the ADA Standards of Care say about early signs in adults and kids. Thirst, bathroom trips, tired. Get checked.
- Many don't know. About 40.1 million people in the U.S. (12.0%) have diabetes, and 27.6% of adults with diabetes, about 11.0 million, are undiagnosed (2023 estimates). [1]
- Common signs. NIDDK lists increased urination, feeling very thirsty, feeling very hungry even after eating, blurred vision, fatigue, sores that are slow to close, and frequent urinary tract, skin or yeast infections. [2]
- Type 2 can be quiet. Type 2 symptoms can develop slowly, over several years, and many people have no symptoms or mild ones. [2] CDC adds dark patches of skin around the neck, armpits or groin, and numbness or tingling in the hands or feet. [3]
- Type 1 can come on fast. Type 1 symptoms usually develop over a few days or weeks. In children, watch for peeing more often, eating more but losing weight, and feeling very thirsty. [2] CDC says unexplained bed wetting or more accidents could be a sign. [3] About 314,000 children and teens under 20 have diagnosed type 1 diabetes. [1]
- Often found late. The ADA Standards of Care say 25 to 50% of people with type 1 diabetes are diagnosed with life threatening diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). [4]
