Caffeine Count Sheet

Read the label. Count every can. Protect your sleep.

As an ER physician and a dad of four boys, I know how fast the coffee, soda and energy drinks add up in a busy house. Energy drinks can carry 54 to 328 mg per 16 oz, so two strong cans can go past 600 mg. This free one page sheet helps your family keep count, calmly and simply.

  • Read the label. Find the caffeine number in mg on every can, bottle, shot and pre workout. Write it down.
  • Add up the day. Coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks and caffeine pills all count. For most adults, the FDA cites about 400 mg a day.
  • Give sleep a 6 hour head start. Set a caffeine cutoff time 6 hours before bedtime.
  • Kids and teens: skip energy drinks. Too much caffeine can raise heart rate and blood pressure and disrupt sleep.
  • Know the red flags. Chest pain, fainting, a seizure or a racing heart that won't slow down? Call 911.
